Graduate Nurse Program

Our Graduate Nurse Programs have been designed to provide a valuable and varied experience for newly qualified nurses embarking on the first twelve months of their role as a registered nurse.

The goal is for the graduate to acquire experience and knowledge within a supportive environment, enabling them to become a competent, confident, accountable and professional health care practitioner.

We aim to equip the graduate nurse with the skills and confidence to successfully initiate known theory with practice within the health care setting. The graduate nurse will be encouraged to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills throughout the program and into their professional careers.


Program Structure

In 2021, BRHS will be offering two types of Graduate Nurse Programs:

BRHS Graduate Nurse Program

This program is specific to BRHS and provides the graduate nurse the opportunity to consolidate practice in various areas in the clinical setting. The 12 month program consists of 2 x 6 month rotational positions throughout the hospital, at 0.8 eft each.  Prior to the program, participants will be given the opportunity to indicate their ward preference for the program. They can choose from areas such as: Medical/Surgical, Aged Care, Rehabilitation, Dialysis, Paediatrics, Emergency, Midwifery, Medical Imaging and Theatre.

10 positions are available in this program.

East Gippsland Collaborative Graduate Nurse Program

This program involves a partnership between BRHS and local primary care and community providers and provides the graduate nurse the opportunity to consolidate practice in various areas including both clinical and community settings. The 12 month program consists of 1 x 6 month rotation in the hospital and 1 x 6 month rotation at a primary care/community setting, at 0.8 eft each.  Prior to the program, participants will be given the opportunity to indicate their preference for the primary/community care setting they would like to experience, either Gippsland Lakes Complete Health (GLCH) or Omeo and District Health Service.

4 positions are available in this program.


How to Apply

To apply for a position in either Graduate Nurse Program, you must participate in the Victorian Nursing Allocation and Placement Service managed by the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV) and also submit your application directly to BRHS.

When applying through the PMCV website it is important that you select the specific BRHS Graduate Nurse Program as your preferred hospital.

 Applications are to include:

  • A letter of application outlining the reasons why the graduate wishes to undertake a graduate year
  • Responses to the key selection criteria listed in the position description
  • Resume
  • Certified Academic Transcripts
  • Certified copies of your last 2 clinical appraisals (one must be 3rd year)
  • Name and contact details of two referees (a minimum of one clinical referee)

Start Date for 2021

The commencement date for the graduate nurse program for 2021 will be mid-January.


Educational Opportunities

The graduate nurse is provided with a number of educational study days throughout the year which are designed to complement the clinical environment.

A strong element of the program aims to use reflection as a means of gaining a greater awareness of their performance and their personal and professional self to ensure they are providing quality, person-centred nursing care.

The graduate nurse is encouraged to regularly attend education sessions occurring within the wards and throughout BRHS, or within the collaborative setting where relevant.


Learning Experiences

The graduate nurse programs will challenge participants to think critically about current knowledge, practice and the importance of evidence based practice in the clinical setting.

The graduate will be encouraged to be ongoing and self-directed in their learning objectives and goals.

All graduates are required to complete compulsory assessable components including work based learning assessments and theoretical work.


Performance Development

The graduate nurses’ performance will be monitored and assessed throughout the year, utilizing reflective and feedback tools to assist with their learning and development.


Support

Each graduate will be assigned a mentor. This process enhances orientation and adjustment to the clinical area and assists in the development of clinical skills and knowledge.

Support is provided by the Graduate Program coordinator, Clinical Educators, Nurse Unit Managers, Nursing and multidisciplinary staff on the ward.


Rosters

The graduate nurse will be expected to work a rotating roster, including mornings, evenings, night duty, weekends and public holidays.


Annual Leave

Annual leave will be available during the program.


Uniform

Nurses in the EGC program are provided with a uniform package through BRHS. The uniform is to be returned, if the graduate chooses not to continue employment with the Collaborative or BRHS following the program.


Employment Details

Participants of the Collaborative Graduate Nurse Program are employed for a fixed term for 12 months. Once the program is complete, there is an opportunity to apply for BRHS’s twelve (12) month Transition Nurse Program or potentially to apply for positions in the Collaborative rotational areas depending on availability.

Participants of the Bairnsdale Regional Health Service Graduate Nurse Program are employed for a fixed term for 12 months. Once the program is complete, there is an opportunity to apply for our 12 month Transition Nurse Program.


Accommodation

BRHS Graduate Nurse Program: There is no onsite accommodation at BRHS however staff can apply for temporary accommodation at our residential complex. This can be negotiated at offer of contract.

EGC Graduate Nurse Program: There is limited onsite accommodation provided through the EGC rotation. During the BRHS rotation, staff can apply for temporary accommodation at our BRHS residential complex during that rotation.


Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) Nurses Registration

All participants must be eligible to apply and be granted their Victorian nurses registration prior to commencement of the program.
