BRHS childbirth and breastfeeding classes

Support and information for parents as they prepare for their birth and parenting journey

About our classes

At Bairnsdale Regional Health Service, we offer classes for prospective parents covering birth, early parenthood and breastfeeding.

They are highly recommended for all first-time parents but can also be useful for parents who would like a refresher.

These classes are run each month and are hosted by experienced midwives.

Childbirth education classes

Our childbirth classes cover topics including:

  • common concerns in late pregnancy,
  • the process of normal birth
  • how to work with pain in labour
  • what complications can occur
  • caesareans
  • what happens in the first few hours and days after birth, and
  • how to care for a newborn.

You can choose to attend three 2-hour classes on weekday evenings or do all three sessions as a full day class on a Saturday. Lunch is included with the Saturday classes.

Options for the childbirth classes are:

  • Saturday 9am to 2pm (includes, or
  • Weekday evenings over 3 consecutive weeks (for example, every Tuesday for 3 weeks), 6pm to 8pm.

Whichever option you choose, the classes cost $30 to attend.

We recommend that you attend classes in your third trimester, before 36 weeks of pregnancy. Your midwife will advise you which month is best for you to attend.

Breastfeeding class

Our free two-hour breastfeeding class is held once a month on a weekday afternoon.

You will learn about the benefits of breastfeeding, practice breastfeeding techniques with dolls and get answers to all your breastfeeding questions.

The breastfeeding class is held on a weekday, usually from 3pm to 5 pm.

Location

The classes are held in the Monash Education building at the main hospital campus on 122 Day Street, unless otherwise advised. Enter from Victoria Street, at the back of the hospital. Car parking is also available there.

We look forward to meeting you and being with you in your journey to parenthood.
