“As soon as the opportunity came up to be trained as a COVID vaccine nurse, I jumped at the chance,” said BRHS Nurse Julie Jeffs.
“I wanted to be on the front lines. I could see how important the vaccine would be in the fight to protect this community against COVID, and I wanted to contribute to that.”
Thanks to the commitment of staff like Julie Jeffs, over the past 6 months BRHS has provided almost 10,000 COVID vaccine doses to the people of East Gippsland.
In the early phases of the vaccine rollout, vaccinations were provided in the repurposed Fraser Ward on BRHS main hospital campus.
However, in order to serve a greater number people and provide better access to vaccinations, a COVID vaccination clinic was established at the Bairnsdale City Oval in June.
Since then the COVID vaccination team, led by Nurse Unit Manager Sue Hutton, has worked to expand the days and hours the clinic is open.
In July it hosted its first Saturday vaccination clinic, and remained open until 7:30 pm on select weekdays to make it easier for working people to get their shot.
“I’m so proud of all the staff working here at the vaccination clinic, everyone from the vaccination nurses to the admin and facilities staff, to the security out front,” Sue said. “They see a lot of people that are anxious about COVID, or that are worried about the vaccine because of all the misinformation going around, but they continue to do an amazing job with great professionalism.”
As of Monday, 13 Sept., 76.3% of East Gippslanders over the age of 15 had received at least one dose, with 52.6% now fully vaccinated.
That represents approximately 50,000 doses, of which BRHS’ Bairnsdale City Oval clinic has provided almost one-fifth.
All Victorians 12 and over can now get their COVID vaccination.
Bookings are encouraged but walk-ins will be accepted.
There are several other locations in the Bairnsdale area providing COVID vaccines, including GPs, pharmacies and community medical centres.
