“It’s Amazing What You Can Do” – Online Course Opens Door to New Career for Lyn Stokes

“When you really want something, it’s amazing what you can do.”

BRHS’ Lyn Stokes has put in some hard yards over the past 18 months.

Lyn spent much of the past year and a half both holding down a fulltime job in BRHS Food Services team and studying part-time after hours.

“It was definitely hard at times,” she reflects.

But the light at the end of the tunnel was a Certificate 3 in Business Administration, and a springboard into a new career.

After 15 years with Food Services, Lyn said she reached a point in her life where she was ready for a new challenge. And she knew gaining additional qualifications was the first step to finding that new challenge.

Some health issues in 2019 were perhaps a reminder of the inevitable progress of life. So too was seeing her own children begin their adult lives and make work and education decisions that would shape their own journeys for years to come.

These moments were the impetus for Lyn to enrol in Open College’s online learning program, a decision that would open new doors in her career and life.

“Open Colleges was great,” Lyn said. “They knew I was working full time and so would need support after normal hours. At that time I was working until 3:30, then I’d go home and get tea ready for my son, do some housework, and then I’d log on to do my study after that.”

“Yeah, it was hard. But it was something I really wanted to do, and so you find a way.”

Lyn’s hard work paid off last month, as she landed a role with the Medical Imaging administration team. (Medical Imaging has been a welcome home lately for BRHS staff looking to expand their careers – they also recently brought on Nick Miller from the Supply team.)

Lyn’s former supervisor, Food Services Executive Chef Cam Penwill, was full of praise for Lyn and admitted it was sad to lose her.

“Lyn was a huge part of the Food Services team for the past 15 years, and a great person to work with,” Cam said, noting Lyn’s key role most recently in the roll-out of the ChefMax software. “I’m sad to see her leave the kitchen, but also really pleased she’s found a new challenge and is staying at BRHS. It’s great when we can keep good people here.”

And how is the change suiting her?

“I love it,” Lyn said with a big smile. “It’s just something new. It’s challenging for sure – there’s a lot to learn. But I’m really loving it.”
