Today Is Crazy Socks for Docs Day

Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day is all about raising awareness of the mental health of all doctors and health practitioners around the world.

This initiative was started by Victorian Physician Dr Geoff Toogood.

The day came out of the response Geoff received when, one day, he wore odd-coloured socks to work.

Dr Toogood has lived experience of both depression and anxiety, and the talk behind his back was that he was falling again.

But in reality he was well, and all of his other socks (apart from the last two odd socks) had been eaten by his new puppy.

Rather than his colleagues starting a discussion about whether he was he okay, he heard whispering behind his back.

And so he started Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day as an attempt to address the stigma and to make it okay for a Doctor not to be okay.

Dr Toogood faced stigma and discrimination at many levels as a result of his depression and anxiety, and was determined that once he recovered he would create an awareness movement to break down the stigma faced by health professionals.

He wants to reduce Doctors suicide round the world.

What does the logo mean and why has it been designed this way?

The socks are odd and brightly coloured, the choice of the colours being Red and Green, to reflect the zone someone may be in with mental health well (green ) or unwell (red).

The socks form faces both front on but also two faces looking to each other to reflect the asking for help (red) and giving (green).

The stethoscope helps form the eyes and the face – it’s the link of many Doctors.

The bell contains a dog – it’s a reminder that pets provide unconditional support.

The feet remind us to walk the talk and no one should walk alone with a mental health issue.
