Falls are not a normal part of ageing and can be a problem in your home and also when you come into hospital.
Hospital falls in particular can be due to your current condition and not being familiar with the area around you. There are easy ways you, your family, friends and staff can help keep you safe while you are getting better.
Being aware of such things as:
- Your environment
- Walking aids
- Using the correct equipment
- Needing help walking
- Going to the toilet
- Clothes and good footwear
Improving your strength and balance whilst in hospital and continuing with this in your home will also help to minimise falls.
BRHS Allied Health Team run a Falls Prevention Group for older adults living in or near Bairnsdale .
If you are at risk of a fall or have fallen over in the past, the group could benefit you.
The service is an 8 week program of one hour sessions, twice a week and include strength and balance exercises chosen to suit your physical ability.
