Dr Will Hardy has been recognised as Bairnsdale Regional Health Service’s Intern of the Year at the recent Monash University School of Rural Health’s Gippsland Regional Training Hub Awards.
The awards are peer-nominated and celebrate Gippsland’s up-and-coming medical workforce. They aim to encourage and support junior doctors who have chosen a career in rural or regional practice and celebrate a senior clinician who has excelled in their support for rural junior doctors in training.
Bairnsdale Regional Health Service’s houses a campus of the Monash University School of Rural Health.
After spending time as a student in Bairnsdale and Sale, Will said he connected with East Gippsland, which guided his decision to intern in the region.
He completed his internship at BRHS with an extended rotation at Macleod Street Medical Centre as part of the Victorian Rural Generalist Program (VGRP).
During his internship, Will took on the role of Junior Medical Officer representative, representing his peers at executive meetings and looking to improve the experience of his fellow junior doctors.
Will plans to remain in Bairnsdale this year and is on his way to becoming a rural generalist.
“I feel very grateful to be thought of as Intern of the Year. I enjoy working at BRHS so much – the workplace culture here is great, and they really take the time to listen to junior doctors,” he said.
“I’ve been trying to support my junior colleagues provide feedback on training and it’s nice that others feel I have been successful in this!”
Associate Professor Rob Dawson, Director of the Gippsland Regional Training Hub, congratulated the six award recipients. who received a certificate and prize.
“It’s wonderful to see such strong commitment among our doctors-in-training to delivering exemplary care to Gippslanders,” Associate Professor Dawson.
“The Gippsland Regional Training Hub is proud to celebrate the achievements of these doctors and looks forward to further supporting their careers to help them to continue to live, work and train here in Gippsland.”
