Oncology Unit

BRHS Oncology Unit nursing staff have extensive experience in all aspects of cancer care. 

The BRHS Oncology Day Unit is a 10-chair unit that operates Monday to Friday during business hours to provide cancer care to the East Gippsland community.

We are supported by the Gippsland Regional Cancer Centre (GRCC), which is located at Latrobe Regional Hospital.

The GRCC provides support to our health service and assists us to deliver quality, safe and equitable care that is closer to your home, wherever possible.

SUPPORTIVE SPECIALIST CANCER SERVICES AT BRHS

  • Cancer Care Coordination: We have our specialist Cancer Care Nurse Coordinator who works with other health professionals and coordinates care and treatment for our cancer patients with complex needs.
  • McGrath Breast Care Nurse for East Gippsland: Our specialist breast care nurse supports people diagnosed with breast cancer, their families and their carers throughout breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and following completion of treatment as required.
  • Prostate Cancer Nurse Specialist: Our specially trained prostate cancer nurse provides patients and their families with care, advice and support in all aspects of prostate cancer care.

  • Cancer Survivorship Program: We have a specialist nurse run the Cancer Survivorship Program. They collaborate with patients, their cancer specialist and GP to improve health and wellbeing after cancer treatment is completed to ensure ongoing care is well coordinated.

  • Symptom and Urgent Review Clinic (SURC): Our nurse-led clinic, staffed by specialist cancer nurses operates Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 4.00pm to assist BRHS patients on current systemic anti-cancer treatment with cancer- or treatment-related side effects.

McGrath Breast Care Nurse for East Gippsland:  Our specialised service supports people diagnosed with breast cancer, their families and their carers throughout the breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and after completion of treatment as required.

The Service is based at Bairnsdale Regional Health Ross Street campus with outreach and home visits available.

Our McGrath Breast Care Nurse:

  • provides a range of information about breast cancer
  • answers questions about breast cancer, surgery, treatment and related issues
  • attends doctor’s appointments with patients if required
  • provides continuity of care
  • liaises with other members of the multidisciplinary health care team
  • offers practical support
  • refers patients to other services
  • provides information about prostheses and when and where these are to be fitted
  • provides Information about reconstruction
  • refers patients to Look Good Feel Better workshop
  • provides Information about breast cancer peer support group meetings
  • gives advice about wig hire, turbans and hair loss, and
  • provides advocacy.

Survivorship Nurse: Our specialist nurse who runs the Cancer Survivorship Program will collaborate with you, your cancer specialist and GP to improve your health and wellbeing after cancer treatment and ensure that all of your previous and ongoing care is well coordinated.
