Hi-tech hearing help in BRHS consulting rooms

People who are hard of hearing can now help Bairnsdale Regional Health Service to trial an amplification device that might make their next visit to BRHS’ consulting rooms easier.

The Maxipro is a small, portable device that connects to headphones and can be worn by anyone who needs it – whether or not they wear hearing aids.

“The device is being trialled by the consulting rooms, and it’s available to anyone who feels that they require assistance with their hearing during appointments,” BRHS Disability Liaison Officer April Freely (pictured) said.

The consulting rooms give visiting medical professionals a place to meet their patients. It caters for everything from optometry and gynaecology to gastroenterology and post-surgical appointments.

“The benefit of the portability is that they can come to our consulting rooms, they can have their medical consult, they can use it to speak to our administration team to make follow-up appointments and, if necessary, they can take the device if they need to go to pathology or imaging or any other department in the organisation,” she said.

The Maxipro is on loan from Hearing Australia in Bairnsdale for the next few weeks.

If the trial is a success, April said she hoped BRHS departments would be able to buy their own Maxipros for use by their patients and consumers.

The trial will continue for the next few weeks, but April said she was amazed by at the difference it can make for people who are hard of hearing in some situations.

“If you’re in a meeting room with five people, you can follow the entire conversation,” she said.

If you’re a BRHS consulting room user and think you might benefit from Maxipro, just ask at reception to use it.
